My Crazy Journeys... Episode 1: The Seoul Adventure
Hii all
(Its long ....but maybe its worth it )
For a few days now, I have been thinking of writing this . I believe I must share this experience with all of you, not only just to make you aware of the world robotics scenario, but also to inspire you all to make a difference in the future of our country.
Background info: Paper presentation in International Symposium for Robotics 2008, Seoul, South Korea.
COEX an WTC at Seoul, South Korea
14th October...My first day in Seoul. The first robots which I saw there were on my way from Incheon airport to the hotel. They have started using Robotic traffic controller at "under construction sites" along the highway. A good start. I must say...almost everything is Automated in Seoul.
15th October....1st day of conference... The first invited speaker was Helen Greiner, The Founder of IROBOT corp. USA. She lectured on what and how the company is now in process of manufacturing Robots for US Armed forces. The IROBOTS soldiers were used in Afghanistan and Iraq already.
Then there was the most awesome of all things...held during the same 3 days of conference at the same venue... A World Robot expo called ROBOT WORLD 2008...
Starting with the industrial manipulaters which are used to asssemble a car...to a small house keeping robot...to a small topsy turvy robots...they were all there.
Let me start with the most gorgious robot....EveR-2 .... A girl robot, which on the first glance, is impossible to make out if its a robot or a girl, is a highly advanced humanoid which resembles a famous korean actress, stands on 2 legs perfectly, moves her arms like humans, has all facial expressions, full voice recognition, and a good sense of humour to spice it all. She was performing an opera at the expo....thrilling isn´t it?
EveR-2 at ROBOT WORLD 2008
Next there were all sorts of humanoids from industrial made to university research made to even lego made.... Dance steps and formations, performing simple tasks, following a human to recognition of masters....they could do it all
There were even funny faced robots for public entertainment...quite funny but a serious research area...to understand facial expression and display human moods.
Air muscles...a recent technology...has made it possible to imitate a real hand ... it holds an egg with such a great precision.
A Fire Fighting robot....displayed brave skills.....
A korean fully Autonomous Land Vehicle was there too at the expo.....A robotic Dianasour which from a distance is difficult to believe that jurrasic park isnt a mith. A great step in the technological development is, that now legged robots are sensible enough to get back to standing position even when they fall off or trip accidentally.
Small sized soccer players were also there accompanied by their junior partners, kids robosoccer.
Then there was a robotic competioion for 8 to 10 yr old kids which involved playing the game of topsy turvy...of course the robots were provided by organizers...
There were many more things and I would like to add a detail for each one....so maybe i will start writing a blog now...
16th October: My presentation day...went well in the end ...sighhhh of relief!!!.....
The invited talk this day was actually not from a robot scientist...but from a Doctor...a Medical one....We were actually shown how a robot performs a Surgical Operation of removing Pancreas tumour and do appendicitis. These were micro robots......amazing but its a reality now in countries like korea.
17th October : Last day of conference....They showed how effectively now they are able to use Robots in Nuclear power plants in Korea, at places impossible for humans to reach considering radiation hazards. precision and power at its best...
I may not be able to detail every research stuff here in this mail but for full detail, I will soon put up everything on my website...everyone is welcome to look at it
I would make available for download, the detail as in all photos and videos and yeah...research papers too....
Well something now regarding the city....I wonder that maybe in some years they would rename it as Automated Seoul or Robotic Seoul....You name any public facility and its already automated...with infinite levels of human security.....
I wish to write more but am real exhausted now....but promise to put everything on my website....
Aamir
