ROBOTIX Events

Robo-Relay
Prizes Worth Rs67,000 !

Task:

Two fully autonomous robots should be able to traverse an irregular track with a baton. The bots should be synchronized so as to run one after another, after the passing of a baton supplied. The first bot will traverse a part of the arena with the baton, stop at a particular point, and pass the baton to its counterpart. Only then the second bot moves ahead to complete the remaining part of the arena.

+Robot Specifications

  • The size of each robot at the start of the event should be restricted within 20cm X 20cm X 25cm (length X breadth X height). The dimensions of each robot should satisfy each of length, breadth and height criterions individually.
  • The two robots of a single team may differ from each other.
  • The robots can exceed these dimensions once the event commences.
  • LEGO kit or other such similar kits or its spare parts are not allowed.
  • Readymade gearboxes can be used but no other part of the robot should contain any readymade components. Simple car bases with no extra features may be used.

+Arena Specifications

Tracks:

  • The tracks will be white in color and their length will lie between 3.0 to 6.0 meters. White line will have no discontinuity.
  • Each white track will be 2cm (with a tolerance of 10%) in width.
  • The track will be an irregular curve. The shape of the tracks will be random with no turn more than 90 degrees.

    Horizontal White Lines:
  • The end of path for the first bot will be indicated by a horizontal white line of total length 30cm intersecting the main track perpendicularly, extending equally on either side of it. The width of the line will be 3 cm (tolerance 10%).

    Flags:
  • There will be three flags on the whole arena as indicated in figure.
    • Flag-1 at 10 cm from the start of the track. The first bot should be placed within this flag at the start of the event.
    • Flag-2 at 10 cm from the horizontal white line indicating the stopping point for the first bot. The second bot should be placed beyond this point at the start of the event.
    • Flag-3 at 30 cm from Flag-2. It indicates the end of region of placement of the second bot.
  • These flags are for manual observations only; not to be detected by the bots.
  • The two bots would be so placed that one of the bots would be at the starting point while the other one would be between flags 2 and 3 at the start of the event.

Starting Signal for the First Bot:
  • The starting signal will be either a red laser or white torch light depending on the participants' choice
  • The distance of this starting light source from the track is also variable from 15cm to 30cm depending on the participant's discretion.
  • The starting signal for the first bot will be given by a light source placed on one of the two sides of the track perpendicular to it, near the start of the track. The side will not be disclosed.

Baton:

  • The baton weight will not exceed 50 grams.
  • A cylindrical wooden/non-metallic baton will have to be passed between the bots. Dimensions of the baton will be: height = 10cm and radius = 2cm.
  • The arena will be having standard classroom illumination. Any extra illumination has to be arranged by the participants themselves.
  • The arena base will be made of plywood painted black with blackboard paint. The tracks will be made of standard white chart paper.

+Scoring Rules

  • Maximum 7 minutes will be given to each team to complete an arena.
  • Each robot will be given a run on the preliminary round arena.
  • Score on each arena will be distributed as follows:
    • 50 (for traversing first part of arena by bot 1 )
    • 100 (for passing the baton)
    • 50 (for traversing second part of arena by bot 2)
    • 100(for dropping the baton by bot 2 after reaching the end of the track)
    • 420-time taken in seconds (only in case both bots completes all its defined tasks)
  • Total score will be a sum of all these.
  • A penalty of 100 points will be there for first bot crossing flag 2.
  • Unless and until the two bots of a particular team complete all the tasks assigned no score for time will be given i.e. time taken will be considered as 420 seconds.
  • No penalty for restarts.
  • The winner is the team with maximum score.

+Event Rules

  • At a time only one team will be allowed to run their bots inside the arena for the preliminary round.
  • Preliminary round would be a "single team at a time" elimination event. Qualified teams making to further rounds will have one-on-one matches.

    Before the Run:
  • At the start of the event, the first robot can be placed at any point within the first flag(flag I) at the start of the track.
  • The second bot should be placed between the flags 2 and 3.
  • The end of the track for the first bot and the placement positions of second bot ( i.e. the white line, flags 2 and 3) will be on a straight line for all rounds.

    Run of first bot:
  • The first robot should start only after receiving the start signal which will be given by a light source.
  • The first bot has to stop on passing the horizontal white line intersecting the main track mentioned in arena specifications.
  • The first bot can in no case cross flag 2 when stopping. There will be a penalty of 100 points for this.

    Passing of Baton:
  • The first bot after completing its part of the lap and stopping beyond the white line mentioned before, should pass the baton to the second bot.
  • Second bot can start only after receiving the baton.
  • The first bot cannot cross the flag 2 except in airspace. The two bots cannot touch each other at any point.
  • The two bots cannot touch each other. The first bot has to stop the moment any part of it crosses the white line and in no case it should cross the 10 cm mark (flag 2) or touch the second bot. However it can cross the flag 2 in airspace.
  • The second bot should start its run from flag 3 after receiving the baton.

    Run of second bot:
  • At the end of the track, the second bot has to stop and drop the baton.
  • The fourth flag has been removed. The second bot should drop the baton at the end of the track.
  • In case the robot completely loses the trail of the track or it encounters some internal problem, the team has an option of restarting their robot.

    Restarts:
  • A maximum of 2 restarts are allowed for the preliminary round.
  • For one-on-one rounds a restart will be allowed only if both the teams' bots lose trail.

    Other Rules:
  • Only power supply line will be allowed to the robot. These cords/cables should remain slack throughout the event.
  • No kind of external control will be allowed.
  • Only the power source will be allowed to be outside the robot. All other circuitry and sensory equipment should be placed on the robot adhering to the ROBOT SPECIFICATIONS listed above.
  • The participants will be provided with 220volts 50Hz standard AC supply. Participants will have to themselves arrange for any other power supply required for their robot.

+General Rules

  • The participant has to submit the a soft copy of the code before the commencement of first round. The microcontroller will be sealed. He/She is not allowed to change the code or the microcontroller once submitted. In case of damage to microcontroller, the submitted code will be provided to the participant.
  • Participants also need to submit a hardcopy of the algorithm used.
  • Use of development boards is allowed.
  • Each team can consist of a maximum of 4 members.
  • Each team should have unique participants i.e. no two teams can have even a single participant common.
  • The team members can be from different institutes or colleges.
  • The right spirit of participation is expected from the participants.
  • The decision of the ROBOTIX team will be final and binding.
  • We will be providing only a desktop computer (P-IV, 256 MB ram, Windows XP). No programmers will be supplied. Participants will have to bring their own programmers, cables and soft-wares.
