“When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.”
- Franklin D Roosevelt
Make a manual bot capable of clasping and moving on a zip line and with the ability to store and drop balls(metal balls, in our case) in the targets underneath and choose paths (in subsequent rounds).
1. A team can consist of maximum 4 members.
2. The bot has to be fixed on the zip-line before the event commences. The bot can have a self clasping mechanism( where the robot is kept on the starting zone in the beginning and it gets attached to the zipline by itself {by some remotely controlled mechanism.}). The participant gets a bonus of 80 points for a self clasping mechanism.[Applicable in the first and second round only]
3. A fixed 220V power supply will be provided by the Robotix Team. Participants may choose to use their own power sources. The power source used need not be on board the robot.
4. In case of any dispute, the decision of Team Robotix would be final and binding.
- The maximum dimensions of the robot should strictly be 30x30x30cm at the commencement of any round.
- However, the dimensions can change once the event starts.
- The robot has to be placed in the same orientation as it is measured at the start.
In the preliminary round, the robot has to traverse on a Zipline (from point A to point B and drop Foodpackets (balls) in predefined Dropzones.
- The preliminary round will be of 3 minutes for each team.
- If during the event, the bot accidentally drops a stored ball anywhere outside, it faces a penalty.
- The bot has to shoot the balls from the specified shooting zone (marked by coloured tapes on the rope) only above the targets. Once the robot leaves a shooting zone, it can’t enter the shooting zone again.
- A ball will be said to hit, if it hits anywhere inside the cylinders or on the top. If the ball falls outside, grazing the outer surface of the outer most cylinder(except the top), it will not be considered.
- The robot can have a maximum of three shoots per drop zone. The total number of shoots allowed is 10.
- The bot cannot drop more than two balls per shoot. In case of failing that, a penalty would be imposed.
- The participant faces a penalty for missing all three shoots for a dropzone, and that is defined as a Ding.
- The bot can take another shot at a target only in the case of a ding . A Re-shot has to be taken, considering that the bot does not move backwards, from the position that it is in, at that time. The re-shot would be accounted in the total number of shots.
- Only one Re-shot is allowed at a dropzone.
- If the bot has dropped all balls, it can go for a refill, but for a penalty.
- A maximum of two refills is allowed in a round.
- Once the bot has passed a shooting zone it cannot move back to re-approach the same.
- If the bot in anyway damages the checkpoints or the zip-line, it is liable to disqualification.
- Wired controls if any, should remain slack always.
- A maximum of 2 timeouts and 1 restart is allowed. Each time out allowed is of max 2 mins.
- In case the bot falls off the zip line, a penalty will be awarded. A maximum of 2 ‘falling’ penalties are allowed. Beyond that, the participant will be disqualified.
The Arena
- The arena consists of a zip-line of length 4.5 meters running from point A to point B.
- The minimum height of the Zip-lines will not be less than 0.75m above the ground.
- The maximum height of the Zip-lines will not be more than 1.5 meters above the ground.
- Zip-lines would be having a downward slope with an angle of about 10 degree from the horizontal.
- The zip-lines will be made of steel bars of square cross-section (1 inch x 1 inch).
- There will be 4 drop-zones present in the arena of height 80, 60, 40 and 20 cms in a progressive way (refer to the arena pic).
- All the dimensions would be maintained within 10% tolerance.
The Dropzone
- The dropzones consist of a series of Bull's eyes.
- Each dropzone consists of three concentric cylinders.
- The inner radius of the central circle will be 4cm[Red zone].
- The inner radius of the second cylinder will be 9cm[Yellow zone].
- The inner radius of the third cylinder will be 14cm[ Green Zone].
- The thickness of each of the cylinders will be less than 1 centimeter.
The Balls( Foodpackets )
- The foodpackets will be metal balls provided by the ROBOTIX team.
- The diameter of the ball is 1.5 centimeters.
- The bot must have a mechanism to store these balls, at max 15 balls.
Indicative Arena is as follows :

Points Breakup : For Red zone :240/H*15
For Yellow Zone :240/H*10
For Green Zone : 240/H*5
where H is the height of the cylinder.
- Penalty for restart= 50 points
- Penalty for Time - out = 25 points
- Penalty if the ball lands somewhere outside (without bouncing from inside) the region.= 20 points
- If the balls bounce back from a wall of the concentric cylinders and lands outside the dropzones, the participant gets= 20 points.
- Penalty if bot falls off the zip-line=150 points
- Penalty for a refill= 100 points
- Bonus for self clasping mechanism= 80 points.
Scoring Formula
180-T + Points gained from the target – Penalties awarded.
The bot has to move from a point A to the point B changing zip-lines in the course of the run.
- The Arena consists of a zip-line of length 4.5 meters running from point A to point B.
- The maximum height of the Zip-lines will not be more than 1.45 meters above the ground.
- The minimum height of the Zip-lines will not be less than 0.85m above the ground.
- Zip-lines would be having a downward slope with an angle of about 10 degree from the horizontal.
- The zip-lines will be made of steel bars of square cross-section (1 inch x 1 inch).
- There will be two platform zone in the arena to facilitate zip-line switching over.
Platform Zone
- There are two platforms in the arena, 100 and 85 centimeters in height.
- The length of the platform is 90 cms.
- The breadth of the platform is 100cms.
- The zipline above this region is parallel to the platform and at a height of 25cms.
- The distance between the two ziplines running parallel to each other is 50cms.

- This round will be of 5 minutes for each team.
- The general rules of this round are same as that of the first round.
- If once the team calls their bot clamped but the bot falls or does not clamp properly, then the team faces a penalty of 30 points.
- For each clamping done right, the team get a bonus of 50 points.
Scoring Formula
300-T(time) + points earned from the drozones+ points earned from the mechanism - penalties awarded
The problem statement of the third round will be declared at the time of the event. However, the abilities required for the robot to complete the given task will be the same as for the first two rounds.
