"But sound aloud the praises, and give the victor-crown To our noble-hearted Firemen, who fear not danger's frown."

~Frederic G.W. Fenn, "Ode to our Firemen," 1878

Theres a Fire out there, which you have to blow out.

Do you have the Hero in you to save people from an Inferno? Robotix 2012 invites all you people with a knack for awesomeness to the Manual event Inferno which involves a scenario from the future where robots are capable of taking the role of fire rescue.

Build a manually controlled robot or a group of robots which can retrieve people (Cylinders) from buildings affected by fire, bring them to the safety zone and fight fire. The tasks include those done by a fire rescue team.

  1. Retrieving white cylinders kept at the extruded windows.
  2. Retrieving black cylinders kept in the interior of the building and accessible from ‘Holes’ in the roof.
  3. Putting off fire, represented by candles, that will be placed at various locations inside and outside the building. If and only if the candle is put out by using the water from the water tank provided, then it will signify ‘Putting off’ the fire.

  1. The robot is free to save people from anywhere in the arena and allowed to climb up the building.
  2. The Safe Zone is a rectangle marked in the arena. If the robot places the cylinders in this region, it gets a bonus of 50 points for every cylinder placed.
  3. The robot has to put off the fire by squirting water on the candle.
  4. The robot will be penalised for coming in contact with the candle.
  5. If a robot tries to put off a fire by coming in contact, it will be penalised for touching the fire and the candle will be replaced in its original position.
  6. The final position of the cylinders, at the end of the run, will be considered for scoring.
  7. The participants should keep in mind that the arena might be wet due to the usage of water.
  8. The bot must not cause any damage to the arena. In event of any damage, the team would be liable for disqualification.
  9. Colour Code
    • Cylinders at windows : WHITE
    • Cylinders within building : BLACK
  10. A maximum number of participants allowed per team: 4 people.
  11. A maximum of two team members can control the robot simultaneously.
  12. The participants will be provided with 220 Volts, 50Hz standard AC supply. Participants will have to themselves arrange for any other power supply required for their robot.
  13. 220 V power supply can also be utilized to power the pumps for the suction mechanism.
  14. Teams qualifying the first round will go into the second round and those qualifying the second round participate in the third round.
  15. Teams cannot tinker with their bots in the arena.
  16. The decision of the Robotix Team shall be final and binding.

Restarts
The robot goes to its starting position with a penalty of 100 points.

Time-Outs
The robot stops it run for 1 minute for repair and resumes it from the same position with a penalty of 50 points.

  1. Maximum dimension : 30*30*30 cm3
  2. More than one bots are allowed, provided they fit into the above given dimensions, taken together, at the start of the run.
  3. The dimensions mentioned are subject to a tolerance of 10 percent.
  4. The robot will have to have it's own onboard water reservoir to carry water from the given reservoir to the fire.
  5. The maximum potential difference that can be used to power the robot will be 30 V.For safety reasons, a 220 V supply will be allowed for pumps provided they are completely insulated.
  6. You are advised to take all precautionary safety measures such as waterproofing, insulation to ensure that shocks, accidental fire due to short circuits etc. can be avoided. Bear in mind that water spilled from the reservoir and used by the bot will be on the arena during the run of your bot.

Scoring

Points for retrieved cylinders in safety zone/on the bot (according to colour codes):
  1. Black : 150
  2. White : 100
  • Placing a cylinder in the Safe Zone: 50
  • Points for putting off a Fire : 250

Terms

  • Retrieved cylinder : Cylinders on board the robot and in the Safe Zone.
  • Fire ‘Put out’ : The candle put out by using the water provided.
  • Coming in contact : Any part of the robot coming in contact with the wax stand or flame.

Penalties

  • Dropping a fire: 100
  • Coming in contact with a fire: 50
  • Penalty for cylinder coming in contact with a candle: 60

Scoring Formula

150*(Black Cylinders Retrieved) + 100*(White cylinders retrieved) + 250*(No. of candles put out)+ 50*(No. of cylinders in safe zone) - Time( in seconds.) - 50*(No. of times the robot touches a fire) - 100*(No. of fires dropped) - 60*(No. of times a cylinder comes in contact with a candle) - 100*(No. of restarts) - 50*(No. of time-outs)

Cylinders

  1. Dimensions: Height - 10 cm, Diameter - 10 cm
  2. The cylinders would be partially hollow and made of wood.
  3. A curved handle, of about 10cm diameter, will be attached to each of the cylinders as shown in the figure.

Colour Coding

(Band around cylinders)

White : Easy accessibility
Black : Difficult accessibility

Therefore there can be two types of cylinders on the basis of colour code :

  1. Black
  2. White

Fire

Signified by candles mounted on wax stands placed at different levels within the building (arena).

Candle

Water Reservoir

A water reservoir of dimensions 30cm*35cm*10cm will be provided in the arena. The robot can fill its on-board reservoir using this water.
Angry face

  1. Retrieve 2 cylinders from windows.
  2. Retrieve 1 cylinder through the roof hole.
  3. Put off 1 fire(candle).

Round One

Angry face
Arena of Round one

Specifications

  1. The arena is a building, most of the part of which is collapsed signified by the variable incline and hole in the roof.
  2. The extrusions in the building represent window sills.
  3. The collapsed debris form an incline with slope of an angle 30 degrees.
  4. Starting/Safe Zone is a rectangle marked in the arena. The participant is free to choose any position in this rectangle as it's starting point.
  5. A water reservoir will be provided at the position shown in the arena.
